Welcome once more to the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) newsletter. It’s under one week until tamasha time, and things are really hotting up!

Festival of Festivals ready to go
One of the most exciting features of ZIFF is the unique Festival of Festivals. In this initiative, other film festivals from around the world present a selection of the best films from their programme. This year’s exciting presentation takes place at the House of Wonders and is as follows:
 
Sunday 19th June: Australian Aboriginal films, Monday 20th June: FESPACO, Tuesday 21st June: trinidad+tobago film festival, Wednesday 22nd June: Sembene Award films Thursday 23rd June: Sembene Award films Friday 24th June: Iranian films Saturday 25th June: Children Mondial & SOS Children
Iran has a long and storied cinematic tradition. Here is a taste of the Iranian films on show in the Festival of Festivals.
A Beautiful Snowy Day (32min)
A critical day in the life of a woman with a child, in which she is forced to makea choice that no mother would want to be confronted with.
The Invitation (30min)
The American army continues to occupy Iraq, while many of the Iraqi peoplehave precious little resources and facilities. In this situation the charismatic Imam Hussein proves a potent draw, and people come in masses to Karbalaby foot to hear him.


The write stuff

Have you always dreamed of writing an award-winning screenplay? The Maisha screenwriting lab can help get you started! Founded by acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), Maisha is a training programme dedicated to the development of filmmakers in East Africa.
The screenwriting lab is a programme for beginner and intermediate
screenwriters. The goal is for participants to develop a story idea and intoa first-draft short screenplay. The mentor, Anjum Rajabali, will instructparticipants on screenwriting essentials like story, character development,structure, and conflict. Participants will engage in group discussions as well asone-on-one meetings with Ms Rajabali.

Music, sweet music

ZIFF means movies, but ZIFF also means music! There’s a great programmeof live music and dance acts lined up this year, with wonderful DJ vibes aswell. The headline music act is Mr Lover-Lover himself, Shaggy, but there’s ahost of other top acts, including:
Jhikoman Tanzania’s best-known reggae artist, Jhikoman blends traditionalroots reggae with acoustic African sounds to create a unique musical style.Uplifting lyrics of peace and unity complete the Jhikoman experience.
Afra Blond An all-women, Afrobeat music and dance band based inStockholm, Sweden. Be prepared to be astounded by their amazing liveshow!
Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi A legend in his native Zimbabwe, Oliver Mtukudzi isgifted with a deep gusty voice and a talent for singing songs that reflect thedaily lives and struggles of the people. Tuku music will move you—and makeyou move your feet!

Venue change for Shaggy concert

The concert featuring reggae superstar Shaggy has moved to a new location. Instead of the Amani Stadium, the man they call Mr Boombastic will now be rocking the amphitheatre at the Old Fort—the home of ZIFF, and in the veryheart of Stone Town. The date for the concert remains the same, Friday 24th
June. Doors open at 6pm.
Tickets will be available from 8am on the day of the concert only, from theZIFF offices at the Old Fort. Only 4,000 tickets will be sold, so we stronglyadvise concert-goers to get to Zanzibar by Thursday to be sure they get thatgolden ticket! Price: TSH 5000 for locals, US $10 for visitors.
